Environment & Surface

Open-air   Shelter   Cave Portable   Megalithic

Geography:
Grotte ouverte à l'est et à l'ouest, vestige d'une grotte plus importante tronquée par la dislocation du massif de grès, au sommet d'une butte dominant la rivière Ecole. Le plan est un "Y" de 7 m de long.

Proximity:

Le massif rocheux est situé à proximité de plusieurs sources. Cinq abris, ornés de gravures schématiques, sont creusés dans ces blocs de grès qui formaient autrefois un ensemble.

Geology:

grès stampien

Surface:

la surface présente dans l'ensemble une bonne cohésion, mais semble plus friable dans le diverticule. La paroi gravée est couverte d'une fine couche de concrétion.

Un signe quadrillé est localisé près de l'accès oriental. Le plafond du diverticule (branche gauche du "Y") porte quelques sillons gravés. La paroi gauche montre une figure de cheval complète, tournée vers la droite. A gauche se trouve une possible seconde tête de cheval, très effacée.

Le style réaliste, la représentation des quatre pattes en perspective, les détails anatomiques finement rendus permettent l'attribution de la gravure au style IV de Leroi-Gourhan (Magdalénien). Les fouilles des sols à l'entrée de la grotte et de l'abri orné situé en face n'ont pas été publiées, et ne permettent donc aucune confirmation de cette attribution stylistique.

Les figures ont souffert du courant d'air régnant dans cette "tranche" de grotte, et certaines parties en sont à peine lisibles. La paroi est en outre friable et fragile.

Conservation:

Good   Quite good   Mediocre   Bad

Intervention:

La grotte est découverte en 1947 par R. Humblot, qui fouillera le sol devant l'entrée en 1949 avec J.L. Baudet. La gravure du cheval est aperçue en 1981 par C. Wagneur, lors d'une campagne de relevés systématiques. M. Garcia a réalisé un moulage de la figure, qui est conservé au Musée de l'Homme à Paris. Le site, classé, est fermé au public.
