Geography:
rive droite du Ladouch. Porche à mi-pente d'une colline, domine de 70 m le fond de la vallée; ouvert au sud-est. Grotte-couloir.

Proximity:

confluence du Ladouch et de la Vézère, près du village du Bugue.

Geology:

calcaire marneux du Sénonien

Surface:

texture en "fromage blanc" (A. Glory), avec nombreux nodules de silex et aspérités. Surface décorée divisée naturellement en 3 registres par des joints de stratification.

Les figures, centralisées sur le même panneau dans le fond de la grotte et gravées pour la plupart, sont étagées sur 3 registres naturels. Leur lecture et leur détermination précise est souvent difficile, entre autre à cause de la nature irrégulière du support et l'imprécision du dessin. Les aspérités du support sont intégrées dans la construction des formes animales.

18 animaux (10 chevaux, 4 bovidés, 1 ours, 1 cervidé (renne?), 1 bouquetin et 1 "félin-cheval") et 8 signes.

attribution stylistique (peu sûre) à une transition magdalénien ancien-moyen (présence d'un renne?).

Notes:

Gravures découvertes par Norbert et Maud Casteret en avril 1951, expertisées par H. Breuil en août de la même année. Matériel archéologique peu abondant et peu significatif. Occupation par l'ours des cavernes.

Intervention:

Relevé par l'Abbé Glory en 1955. Fouillles de F.M. Bergounioux (géologue), qui effectua plusieurs sondages près de l'entrée, dont un de plus de 20 m de profondeur. Site classé Monument historique le 20/04/1961. Aménagements récents (années 80) pour l'observation sécurisée des gravures, dont un nivellement général de la grotte et un abaissement du sol à proximité du panneau orné.
