Geography:
Rive gauche de la Petite Beune. S'ouvre à l'est dans une falaise de 30 m de haut dominant le vallon de Goulet de Cazelle. L'entrée principale est encadrée de 2 entrées secondaires qui aboutissent dans la même salle centrale.

Proximity:

 250 m du vallon de Bernifal. Autres grottes en amont: (sur la même rive) Grotte de Bernifal, du Bison, de Sous-Grand-Lac, (sur la rive opposée) de Nancy. Aucun gisement paléolithique important n'est encore connu dans cette vallée.

Geology:
calcaire coniacien

Surface:
prolifération algale due à la pénétration de la lumière du jour jusqu'au principal panneau orné

Description:

 Engravings   Paintings   Painted engravings   High or low-relief   Sculpture
au fond de la galerie axiale, à 18 m de l'entrée, se trouve un panneau comportant 4 chevaux gravés, tournés vers la droite, dont 2 réduits au protomé et 2 presque complets. Les figures sont organisées autour d'une fissure verticale naturelle. Sur la paroi faisant face à ce panneau, quelques traits gravés délimitent une figure de bouquetin, très altérée. Quelques traits noirs, non figuratifs (et mal conservés), se remarquent à l'entrée de la galerie axiale.Sur la paroi gauche de la galerie principale se trouve un grand signe ovalaire (45 cm) et au fond, une figure de bison dont la ligne dorsale fondue dans un relief naturel est complétée par des traits dans l'argile couvrant la paroi. Cette figure a été très abîmée peu de temps après sa découverte, et il n'en subsiste que l'arrière-train.

Risk:
altérations naturelles: prolifération algale due à la pénétration de la lumière jusqu'au panneau orné. Corrosion naturelle de la roche encaissante. Altérations anthropiques: la grotte ne dispose pas de système de fermeture, mais est éloignée de toute zone habitée. Aménagement en habitat à l'époque médiévale. Dégradations récentes (bison sur argile).

Conservation:

 Good   Quite good   Mediocre   Bad

Intervention:
Panneau principal découvert en 1903 par D. Peyroni suite à des prospections systématiques dans la région. Relevés réalisés par H. Breuil en 1928, publiés dans "Quatre cents siècles...". Classée Monument historique le 26/02/1974. D'autres figures sont remarquées en 1981 (B. Henriette et M. Lamy: bison sur argile) et 1982 (N. Aujoulat: grand signe ovalaire). Ne se visite pas.
