Geography:
Grotte ouverte au nord dans une falaise de la rive droite du Célé.

Proximity:

Le confluent du Lot et du Célé se trouve à proximité. La grotte ornée du Cuzoul de Mélanie se trouve en face de la grotte du Cantal. Le village de Cabrerets se trouve à quelques centaines de mètres en aval de la grotte.

La grotte est un simple tunnel de 3,5 m de large, 3 m de haut et 160 m de long. La décoration se concentre en un panneau, situé sur un plafond à 90 m de l'entrée. Elle est constituée de taches rouges diffuses, vestiges de peintures, de signes ovalaires ou rectangulaires rouges tracés au doigt, de ponctuations digitales, de signes "en panier à anse" (formés de bandes parallèles entourées de points), ainsi qu'une main frottée. La seule représentation animale est un protomé de bouquetin rouge.

Chronology:

H. Breuil et A. Lemozi attribuaient les figures au Magdalénien final, par comparaison avec Ussat, Niaux, Altamira ou Marsoulas. M. Lorblanchet souligne plutôt les analogies régionales, avec Cougnac, Pech-Merle, Les Fieux, qui penchent pour une attribution plus ancienne, au style III de Leroi-Gourhan.

Les peintures sont découvertes par A. Lemozi en 1920; celui-ci réalise un sondage à l'entrée, sans résultat; il décrit les peintures en 1937 et 1957. De nouveaux relevés sont exécutés par M. Lorblanchet en 1980.
