Geography:
Carving zone of Cheles is located between Molino Manzanez area (Manzanez Mill) to Friegamuñoz Stream through the left bank of the river Guadiana. This area is affected by seasonal floodings of the river. Characteristic vegatation is mediterranean meadow. Traditional use of the land it's been the shepherding, the hunt and the fishing.

Proximity:

We arrive to the riverside where the engravings are located throught a path who runs 4 kms. from Cheles -which is the nearest locality to the rupestrian group- to the Guadiana. In the riverside we find a mill named " Molino de Manzánez" which is a common public area. About 400 meters to the south of the mill, next to a stream there is this rock with engrved surface.

Metamorphic slate.

Surface:

It is a narrow and rectangular surface , red coluored and quite damaged by cracks.

This panel shows us two types of technical of engravings: percussion and incision. In the superior part there is an inclined bar and it measures 6 cm. long and 1 cm. wide. To the left of this bar there are four crossed lines carried out by means of incision that they measure 2'5 cm. long each one. Eight cms. to the right we see a group of fine lines. To the around is a group of a score of lines of this type and of different sizes. The shortest measures 0'3 cm. long and the longest is of 4 cm. long. Under we can see another group of ten short curved lines. Under there are two incise horizontal lines. They measure 12'5 and 14 cm. long respectively and they are cut by a vertical crack. In the inferior part of the panel there are percussion remains that form a bar and in the superior part of the bar there are some loose bows. This bar measures 8 cm. long. Eight cms.under there is a graphited line and is 4'5 cm. long.

The principal risk that run the engravings are the future inundation of the area due to the constrution of the portuguese dam of Alqueva.

Intervention:

Guadiana Valley carvings have had three campaigns of field work along year 2001 -5 months- for the whole documentation of the 573 rocks found in the site. All records are now in proccess of study for at least 4 months, that will come to a joint exhaustive publication with the ones recorded in portuguese river side. There are also incoming works consisting in the reproduction of a number of rocks in plastic materials for forecoming studies and real reproduction if posible in the future.
