Geography: |
Carving zone of Cheles is located between Molino Manzanez area (Manzanez Mill) to Friegamuñoz Stream through the left bank of the river Guadiana. This area is affected by seasonal flooding of the river. Characteristic vegatation is mediterranean meadow. Traditional use of the land it's been the shepherding, the hunt and the fishing. |
Proximity: |
We arrive to the riverside where the engravings are located throught a path which runs 4 kms. from Cheles - the nearest locality to the rupestrian group- to the Guadiana. In the riverside we find a mill named " Molino de Manzánez" which is a common public area. Site 013 is about 50 m far from the river bank to the SW in a subarea denominated Mill area. |

It is a great rock in which the surfaces with engravings are distributed in different levels presenting several inclinations and orientations. They are sepparated by big cracks. In the whole site the filiform motifs prevail. Complex groups of lines without defined form and other clearer ones as indoors structure shape and zig-zags.
We can see series of small crisscross lines, very united prepared in vertical, horizontal or inclined position; series of fine lines in horizontal and parallel position; groups of very deep lines in whose realization has possibly been employed a metallic instrument.
There is an important and complex group of lines without very interesting defined form for us. It consists on the intersection of a great number of different lines prepared in horizontal, vertical and inclined position whose dimensions vary between scarce mm and 29 or 30 cm long, with lines in semicircular form. The dimensions of the group are more or less, 40 cm of wide and 0 cm of long.
We can also see series of small lines, possibly modern, without patina. In its execution has been employed a instrument with section in V.
But there are also motives like an irregular zigzag in having inclined position, or for example an indoors-structure shape that is formed by the intersection of 3 vertical lines with 4 horizontal. Two semicircular lines close the motif.
It is difficult to determine the number of lines that are there, although we can consider that 13 main groups of lines exist.

Neolithic 8.000 BP - Iron Age I 1000 BP. The patinated filiform representations present in this rock appear as well in other chele's sites either superimpossed or below neolithic carvings so no detailed cronology can be given.

Risk: |
The conservation of the surface is good, although is a little bit wornout because of the erosion of the water, and is also affected by the lichens. Nowadays, it´s principal risck is the construstion of a dam - Alqueva´s dam - wich will flood the hole area. |

Intervention: |
Guadiana Valley carvings have had three campaigns of field work along year 2001 -5 months- for the whole documentation of the 573 rocks found in the site. All records are now in proccess of study for at least 4 months, that will come to a joint exhaustive publication with the ones recorded in portuguese river side. There are also incoming works consisting in the reproduction of a number of rocks in plastic materials for forecoming studies and real reproduction if posible in the future. |
