Geography: |
Carving zone of Cheles is located between Molino Manzanez area (Manzanez Mill) to Friegamuñoz Stream through the left bank of the river Guadiana. This area is affected by seasonal flooding of the river. Characteristic vegatation is mediterranean meadow. Traditional use of the land it's been the shepherding, the hunt and the fishing. |
Proximity: |
We arrive to the riverside where the engravings are located throught a path which runs 4 kms. from Cheles - the nearest locality to the rupestrian group- to the Guadiana. In the riverside we find a mill named " Molino de Manzánez" which is a common public area. It is next to the river, in the sector that we denominate mill. |

We can see in this surface pecked motifs and thread like lines. Two semicircular pecked traces are located in the upper part, its measures are more or less 11-12 cm long and its thickness is about 1/ 1.5 cm wide. And we find also a complex association of figures in which an ancor shaped antropomorph and a snaky figure can be isolated. The vertical ancor shaped antropomorph contacts in its lower part with an horizontal and irregular snaky figure. The measures of the ancor shaped antrop are 14 cm long and 8 cm wide, and the snaky figure measures are 16 cm long. The thickness of both figures is more or less 1 cm wide. There are another 6 snaky figures along the surface, which are placed in vertical and inclined position; its measures vary between 8 and 27 cm long. Is important taking into account that two of this figures are uncompleted, for they just have the outline indicated. Next there are two circles whose diameter are 11 cm and 7 cm respectively, both with two parallel appendixes whose dimensions are arround 5 cm long in both cases.
But there are another pecked motifs without defined form, such as complex structure formed to the joint of "S" shaped traces, snaky traces figure and semicircular traces which are formed an irregular ovoid and hollow structure. Its measures are 39 cm long and 19 cm wide. Another complex motifs are two parallel and vertical traces, which are finished in semicircular form and another motif very difficult to defined that is formed by the join of vary pecked traces.
We can also see some groups of pecked without defined form along the surface, and there are some groups of interlaces and isolated fine lines without form in a vertical, horizontal and inclined position.

Guadiana Valley carvings have had three campaigns of field work along year 2001 -5 months- for the whole documentation of the 573 rocks found in the site. All records are now in proccess of study for at least 4 months, that will come to a joint exhaustive publication with the ones recorded in portuguese river side. There are also incoming works consisting in the reproduction of a number of rocks in plastic materials for forecoming studies and real reproduction if posible in the future. |
