Nelle località Timpone e Piana di Sopra vi sono numerose grotte di interesse preistorico, con depositi ed incisioni del Paleolitico superiore.

Sono presenti sulle pareti della grotta alcuni cervidi incisi molto schematici. Attestata la presenza pure di segni lineari, disposti su file parallele, ognuna delle quali è composta da un numero uguale di tratti. Le linee erano sia incise che dipinte.

Notes:

I segni lineari, presenti in questa ed in molte altre grotte della Sicilia, sono stati rinvenuti con le stesse caratteristiche in Italia peninsulare dalla Liguria (Balzi Rossi) fino a grotta Romanelli e al riparo del Romito. Le linee incise, più simili ad elementi provenienti dalla Francia sono più ordinate, talvolta organizzate in serie e retini. La loro datazione gravita attorno al Mesolitico tardenoisiano. Ignoti restano il significato e la funzione di queste incisioni lineari.

EuroPreArt, European Prehistoric Art, is a web-based archaeological project funded by the European Union which aims to establish a lasting data-base of European prehistoric art documentation, to launch the base of an European institutional network and to contribute to the awareness of the diversity and richness of European Prehistoric Art.
