Geography:
grotte ouverte au sud, 10 m sous le sommet d'une falaise du cirque d'Estre (ou Combe d'arc), dominant l'Ardèche de 230 m.

Proximity:

 Plusieurs grottes sont creusées dans le même massif, dont certaines ont connu une occupation paléolithique: la Bergerie du Planchard (70 m au sud-est), les Huguenots (500 m à l'ouest), les Deux-Avens (750 m au nord). La grotte surplombe la "maison Charmasson".

Le porche ouvre sur une galerie de 30 m de long (10 à 15 m de large, 5 à 8 m de haut), prolongée sur 15 m par un diverticule débouchant sur un puits profond de 4 m. La grotte comprend une seule figure pariétale: un cheval tracé au doigt sur la paroi verticale argileuse du puits. L'arrière-train montre des traces de reprise.

Aucun vestige archéologique ne permet d'évaluer la chronolgie ; les déblais des fouilles pratiquées au 19e siècle par J. Ollier de Marichard ont livré un matériel chalcolithique et des vestiges de faune et d'industrie peut-être paléolithiques. Le style de l'ouvre (schématisme, pattes triangulaires, ventre enflé) le rapproche des gravures "archaïques" de la région ; le concrétionnement de la paroi argileuse confirme son ancienneté.

La grotte est visitée par les spéléologues. La gravure doit sa conservation à sa position sous une avancée stalagmitique. L'entrée de la grotte a servi de bergerie.

Intervention:
Des fouilles sont pratiquées au 19e siècle par J. Ollier de Marichard. La gravure a été découverte en 1960 par J.L. Roudil, et brièvement mentionnée en 1967. Le site, classé Grand site le 24 février 1982, est fermé au public.
