Environment & Surface

Altitude:	150 m Open-air Shelter Cave Portable Megalithic
Geography:	Incorporated into a wedge tomb on the summit of a low level hillock on the eastern side of the Scorid river (forms the western roof slab). Landuse consists of rough grazing and peat cutting. The tomb is oriented E-W
Proximity:	Relatively close to a river, lake and waterfall, and located within a pre-bog field system which features settlements, ritual / funary sites, enclosures, standing stones,and fulachta fiadh.

Geology:	Sandstone boulder
Surface:	Smooth and convex, featuring small patches of flat lichens. The surface is almost horizontal with an inclination of 10 degrees. No signs of dressing were noted.
Dimensions:	Length 2.35 m. Width 1.70 m. Depth 0.35 m.

A single cup mark adjacent to a penannular ring lies in the centre of this large stone, and a second cup mark was noted at the NE edge. The motifs consist of abstract 'cup-and-ring marks' of the Galician style found across Ireland, the United Kingdom Western France and Iberia. They consist of deep pecked glyphs produced with a hard tool (probably stone or antler)

Status:	Public Private Park Classified site
Risk:	The motifs are quite difficult to see and are situated on the roof slab of the megalithic wedge tomb, and are thus exposed to natural causes of erosion and weathering

Intervention:	The site is marked as an area of interest within an educational walking tour of the valley which is privately owned but is accessible to the public as a natural park owing to its environmental and archaeological significance. Recorded in Cuppage (1986). Listed in the Sites and Monuments Record of Ireland
