Geography: |
Carving zone of Cheles is located between Molino Manzanez area (Manzanez Mill) to Friegamuñoz Stream through the left bank of the river Guadiana. This area is affected by seasonal floodings of the river. Characteristic vegatation is mediterranean meadow. Traditional use of the land it's been the shepherding, the hunt and the fishing. |

We arrive to the riverside where the engravings are located throught a path which runs 4 kms. from Cheles - the nearest locality to the rupestrian group- to the Guadiana. In the riverside we find a mill named " Molino de Manzánez" which is a common public area.The rock is placed about 1 km to the South from the mill. |

The most abundant type of figures that we can find on this rock is the circle. These figures are from 2 cm to 30.5 cm diameter, and from 0.4 cm to 2 cm thick, and appear either isolated, or joined to another ones, or placed in the inner part of a larger circle. In some cases, the circles are made with a discontinous pecked. On this rock we can see other kinds of pecked figures. The first one is an schematic zoomorph. In this figure we find some anatomic details: trunk (made with a empty circle 16 cm diameter), legs (two complets, and the trace starting the two more ones) and neck. Neither the head, nor the muzzle, nor the horns appear in this zoomorphic figure. The second one is a anthropomorph. Its trunk and its head are two circles 5 cm and 3 cm diameter respectivelly. From the trunk arise four appendixes (legs and arms). The upper extremities are 3.7 cm and 1.5 cm long, and de lower ones are 7 cm long. The last figure is a upside down F-shaped figure, 16 cm long and 1 cm thick. Finally, we find in this rock some thread-like lines from 0.4 to 5.7 cm long. Sometimes these lines appear forming groups, but they can also appear isolated. In some cases we can see a superimposition of the thread-like lines on the peckeds, and viceversa.

Rock damaged by fissures and washed off by water.Originally the engraved surface was partially covered by lichen, ground grass, wich were removed when discovered. Nowadays, it´s principal risck is the construction of a dam - Alqueva´s dam - wich will flood the whole area. |

Intervention: |
Guadiana Valley carvings have had three campaigns of field work along year 2001 -5 months- for the whole documentation of the 573 rocks found in the site. All records are now in proccess of study for at least 4 months, that will come to a joint exhaustive publication with the ones recorded in portuguese river side. There are also incoming works consisting in the reproduction of a number of rocks in plastic materials for forecoming studies and real reproduction if posible in the future. |
