Geography:
Localiza-se a noroeste da foz do rio Côa, entre o Vale José Esteves (sudoeste) e o Vale de Cabrões, na margem esquerda orográfica do Rio Douro.

Proximity:

Este núcleo está a cerca 500m da foz do rio Côa e próximo dos carris da linha ferroviária do Tua.

Geology:

O Vale da Vermelhosa foi escavado pelas águas de escorrência, sob controlo estrutural, num afloramento da Formação da Desejosa. As rochas são de xisto grauváquico Ante-Ordoviciano. Esta é uma massa rochosa metasedimentar do "Complexo Xisto Grauváquico" denominado como "Grupo do Douro". Este é constituído por rochas muito antigas (com mais de 500 milhões de anos), submetidas a fenómenos de metamorfismo e deformação, que as transformaram em rochas sedimentares.

Surface:

Superfícies vermelhas verticais, lisas e suaves, atravessadas por várias fracturas que subdividem a rocha em blocos.

Trata-se da superfície com menor numero de gravuras (todas filiformes) do que a rocha r.4 mas igualmente interessante. Nela é possivel observar cenas de duelo entre personagens mascaradas. Na faze desses antropomorfos é na verdade possivel ver uma especie de bico (provavelmente uma mascara)

Notes:

Abstract: Vermelhosa it's a rock art open-air site of Vale do Côa Archaeological Park. It's located on the left margin of Douro river, and integrates 8 schist engraved rocks. Vermelhosa rock art, is mostly represented by zoomorphic semi-esquematic mothifs; fight scenes between warriors with bird-heads armed with spears; anthropomorphs riding horses and naturalistic zoomorphs. These engravings are dated from Palaeolithic and Iron Age, and were made by scratching technique.
